The Scheldebrouwerij has a fairly unique story that I’ve always remembered since hearing it told some 15 years ago.
The brewery started as the backyard project of two friends. Nothing unique there. This was in the southern Dutch enclave of Zeeuwse-Vlaanderen, with the Schelde River to the north (hence the name) and Belgium to the south. Thq unique thing was that when they expanded and required a bigger brewery they purchased the old Sterkens brewery in the Belgian town of Meer.
Deciding that Belgian beers carried more prestige than Dutch beers did, the Schelde Brewery has since been known as a Belgian brewery!
To the north west of Belgium, you can find their beers in the bigger beer cafes, though this gets harder the further south and east you go.
Our beer name translates as ‘Lame Good Guy’ and is an obscure hint to the nature of the beer – an easy drinking Belgian blonde.
Dark blonde in colour from the pale and caramel malts, there is a gentle early malt sweetness with hints of ripe yellow fruits. A good level of hop bitterness from the Hersbracker and Saaz hops balances things well for a smooth, slightly prickly finish.
