I don’t think I’ve ever had a Black IPA from De Molen before, but they can pretty much brew any style of beer so I was really keen to taste this new creation of theirs. And the eager anticipation didn’t lead to disappointment!
So here we have a Black IPA or Cascadian Dark Ale (which is a much more correct description of this beer style) with cress, Szechuan peppers and kaffir lime leaves. And that’s where the beer gets its name from – ‘Plant & Spicy’.
As you pour the beer you are greeted by a lovely citrus aroma. These are the types of Black IPA’s I really like. Dark malt and a herbal note are also there.
To taste, there is a delicious dark malt flavour, slightly sharp and roasted. And the citrus is also in the flavour thanks to the kaffir lime leaves and cress. It isn’t until you’ve had a few sips that you really get any hint of the Szechuan peppers, showing how well they have been integrated in the flavour.
Super tasty, light tasting for the ABV with a great balance of flavours, this is such an easy beer to enjoy. Bravo De Molen!
