\The Baltic Porter is a beer style that you don’t really see that often, but if you do see one you probably want to try it as they are usually very tasty.
The style is an offshoot of the normal porter, a dark malty beer. In the late 1700’s and through the 1800’s English brewers made higher strength batches of their porters to send to the cooler climes of the Baltic states and that’s where the name comes from.
This beer from De Molen is a one-off, as all their specials are. And Koffie and Toffee pretty much sums up the flavours you are going to get.
Oats are added to the standard four ingredients, there is no actual toffee or coffee added. All of the flavour comes from the malt. An initial sweetness greets you, with the full flavours of chocolate and toffee.
As the beer progresses this sweetness dries out and you get more of the roasted malt character with hints of really dark chocolate and coffee. This lasts through to the end with some bitterness from Hallertau Blanc and Fox hops, that add to some sharp roasty malt flavours to the pleasant slightly spicy, tingly sweet finish.
