You don’t have to be multi-lingual to work out this beer has coffee in it, but the first part of the name might be a little trickier. It means ‘banana puff’, as in the deep fried dessert.
I’m sure there are many recipes for banana puffs, but the basic premise is slices of banana with vanilla and a little bit of spice. De Molen of course pimped their dessert with the addition of chocolate and coffee.
The beer lists the ingredients as: barley malt, oat flakes, coffee, cocoa, dried banana, hops and lactose. Coffee is the first thing I notice when pouring this beer, it is literally jumping out of the bottle. But I know I’m in the minority by not having coffee as one of my vices, so I’m assuming less of you will be as apprehensive as me tasting this beer.
Yep, there’s the coffee front and centre. But to be fair, coffee is always strongest when the beer is colder. As it warms, the other flavours come out more and the coffee subsides. There is a pleasant caramel and chocolate malt sweetness to this beer, with the vanilla and lactose as well. The banana isn’t so obvious straight away, but I reckon it is more pronounced in the aftertaste.
With coffee, this is never going to be a favourite of mine, but I think it is a clever beer in combining all of the ingredients to present a liquid dessert that is a little different.
