by Abdij Der Trappisten Van Westmalle
This beer from the renowned Westmalle Trappist Monastery is a glowing golden colour; slightly hazy as a result of secondary fermentation in the bottle. The head is two fingers of thick white foam, which slowly collapses in on itself. It has tropical fruit aromas of pineapple and grapefruit, along with a good amount of sweet malts and of course the typical Belgian yeast.
It is the memory of the mouthfeel that urges you back for more. It holds well against the 9.5% ABV, a beer to sip and savour. The Westmalle Tripel is credited with being the first golden strong pale ale to use the term ‘tripel’. The current formula has remained practically unchanged for more than 50years, which may explain why it is known as the ‘mother of all tripels!’
