This beer has reddish brown body and a good white head. The aroma has hints of plums, cherries and raisins, as well as some light spicing and deep candied sweetness.
The taste is not as sweet as the nose might suggest, being a nice balance of candied fruit sweetness and caramel malt backdone against a little roasted bitterness and spicing.
The beer dries out as it progresses, with a slight lingering bitterness.
About the beer: the Donker is the most recent beer in the Augustijn label range (there is also a Blond and Grand Cru). Typically, the US is the biggest market for this beer, where the Augustijn range is brought in by SAB Miller and sold under the name ‘St Stephen’.
