Brasserie des Legendes is a brewery project that was started by husband and wife team Pierre and Vinciane Delcoigne when they purchased the run-down Castel d’Irchonwelz in the town of Irchonwelz which is about 60km directly south of Ghent.
They started the project in 1997, and their first beer was brewed in 2000. Since then they have produced quite a few different beers under multiple different labels, none of which are really that commonly found even in Belgium.
La Corne might be the most known of all the brands, even though it is much more recently introduced than some of the others. This might be in part thanks to the wonderfully elaborate curved horn glass that is marketed with these beers. It is completely impractical but it does look amazing, complete in the wooden holder.
Anyway, our beer is an oaked quadrupel. Slightly lighter in colour than you might expect of a quad, even with the ‘oaking’. The aroma is sweet and strong, with lots of vanilla.
Tasting the beer, there is a sweetness of caramel from the malt, with some dark dried fruits as well. Then there is the oak character offering vanilla, all wrapped up in a rather inviting, warming but ever-so-easy to drink beer for the ABV. This one is a sit and sip beer!
