This is an interesting beer from Brouwerij Corsendonk, but is it a dubbel-kriek or is it a ‘double kriek’?
Our beer pours a dark amber colour with a pinkish hue, thanks to the cherries. And you’d have to be missing a sense not to pick up the strong cherry aroma jumping out of the glass. The aroma is all cherries, with maybe a hint of woodiness and leather in behind.
The first taste is sweet and inviting. A full bodied caramel malt backbone with hints of dried fruits in amongst all that cherry flavour. Interestingly, the cherry flavour has a sour aspect, which would make sense as the brewery website references the whole cherries used.
But I suspect there is also some cherry syrup used as there is an extra sweetness, and that Amoretto flavour you only get in cherry syrup. Its not bad, but it is there.
Good carbonation allows the flavours to dance around your mouth, and the beer does dry out a little on the finish. And for the ABV this really is dangerously drinkable.
So do you think it is a merge of two Belgian styles, or a big cherry sour?
