This has to be the most (in)famous of all of the Stone Brewing beers. An American Strong Ale with all the bluster and bravado of the most patriotic of redknecks, but with the taste to back up all the trash talk.
“This is an aggressive beer. You probably won’t like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate an ale of this quality and depth. We suggest you stick to safer and more familiar territory...”
Fair to say, the marketing for this beer didn’t follow industry best practice. But it does dare you to try – and like – this beer. And it worked, as it became the flagship beer for Stone Brewing during their heyday in the 2000’s.
Think of an English Strong Ale, malty with some earthy bitterness just to balance things out. Now dial the bitterness up to 10 and you get the picture. There is a hint of malty sweetness right at the front that quickly gives way to all that bitterness. And while the bitterness is intense, it still has some degree of balance as it really isn’t an assault as much as a (jarring) awakening for the palate.
Full of flavour, arresting, memorable and bang out of order. This beer was Stone.
An American Strong Ale, a big malty body, lots of fruit flavours and a pleasant hop bitterness

Probably my favourite of the Stone beers is this gluten--reduced West Coast IPA
