October means it is time for the obligatory German Festbier in our packs, and as always this beer is a real treat.
I could just about copy and paste from my notes last year. Another beautiful centuries-old German monastery producing amazingly good beers. Blah, blah, blah!
The Andechs Monastery was founded in 1455, perched atop the ‘Heilige Berg’ (Holy Mountain) overlooking the Ammersee which is the third largest lake in Bavaria. It is outside the walls of old Munich so isn’t one of the official Oktoberest beers. But people from all over visit what is considered the oldest place of pilgrimage in all of Bavaria.
The Kloster brewery also has a hand in enticing visitors to sample the traditional German beers as well as the roast pork knuckles that are considered by many to be the best on offer in Bavaria. That’s something I’d like to test for myself on a visit one day.
Our beer as it is described on the bottle is a ‘Super Premium Bavarian Lager’, also known as a ‘Spezial Hell’ (Helles lager). The beer has a bright golden body with a nose full of sweet bready malts. It is soft and creamy to taste, with that lovely bready malt sweetness balanced beautifully by the spicy, floral hops.
Just a delightful, easy beer that shows off everything that is so good about German lagers.
