I enjoyed the Andechs beers so much last year, so when I knew another shipment was coming into Australia I had to reserve some for our beer club.

To refresh your memories, Andechs is a monastery brewery, run by the Monks.  It sits atop a hill about 40km south-west of Munich.  And makes great beers!

So here we have a Dopplebock Dunkel.  Dunkel meaning dark.  A bock is a strong lager, so a ‘dopplebock’ is a doubly strong lager.  So what we have to look forward to is a strong dark lager.  Find your favourite stein (or anything that will hold a half litre pour) and here we go.

Pouring an attractive amber colour, you do need room at the top of your glass for some serious foam that will settle pretty quickly.  An inviting aroma of dark stone fruits, layers of caramel malt and burnt brown sugar dares you to taste.

It is smooth and rich, with all those malty flavours coming to the fore.  As it progresses there is a little roasted malt bite as well, with very little hop bitterness.

I’m always glad that these German beers come in big bottles!
