I think we have a real trat for you guys here, though I am conscious that this beer could be a little divisive. But I’ll take the risk!
De La Senne are unashamedly pro-Brussels, and there are lots of ingredients or characteristics to their beers that reflect this local bias. And probably none more so than in this beer – the Bruxellensis Reserva.
At its heart, this beer is a Belgian Pale Ale brewed with a touch of toasted barley malt and a 100% secondary fermentation with a Brettanomyces yeast strain that is native to Brussels. Every so often, the brewery decide to age a small amount of a batch in red wine barrels for 6 months, which gives birth to the ‘Reserva’ beer.
The aroma is interesting enough to enjoy for a few minutes before you take your first sip. Typical of Brettanomyces, there is a rustic, wild character to the yeast that gives of (amongst other things) leather, tobacco, wood, pineapple and more. ‘Barnyard’ or ‘horse blanket’ are often used descriptors.
These flavours are enjoyed in the taste as well some red fruits and a vinous element thanks to the time in the red wine barrel. It has both a soft mouthfeel and a spritzy back end that lifts all the flavours. It finishes a little bitter with more than a touch of acidity.
If you aren’t immediately a fan of this, please give it a little while and at least three good sips before making your mind up. It is a rare find and deserves your time.
