I must admit that dubbels/bruins are not my preferred style of beer. I can’t remember the last time I chose one over a saison, blond or tripel. But the Emelisse Brewery has been knocking it out of the park with all their beers, so figured their dubbel was worth a look.
It pours a reddish-brown colour, with a creamy head. Lots of inviting aromas in this beer: sweet caramel malt, Belgian candy, raisins, yeast.
The flavour is sweet early on with the caramel malt, dark stone fruit, Belgian candy sugar, and rich bready malt tempting you in. The rich flavour is then joined by some spicy notes and hop bitterness.
Despite the rich flavour, the beer really dries out as it progresses, which adds another element to the profile.
As the autumn weather rolls in, I reckon this will be a perfect beer to take a little chill out of a later afternoon beer in the back yard.
