Timmermans is the world’s oldest lambic brewery with a history dating back to 1702. It probably isn’t the most ‘fashionable’ of Belgium’s lambic breweries but it does produce some very good lambics without the hype of Cantillon, Boon or 3F.
They claim that this beer is the only one of its type (in the world!), and while I won’t vouch for the validity of that claim I can say I haven’t come across another one like this in all my time in Belgium.
The beer is an unblended lambic, that is lambic from one particular oak vessel that isn’t blended with any other lambic (as they do for say a geuze). It does use malted wheat in the grain bill and spices such as coriander and orange peel are added to the beer as well.
I’ve saved this beer for summer as I really think this is the perfect beer for our warm summer afternoons. I happily have this beer colder than most others and it is super refreshing.
As it warms, the sourness comes out a little more but don’t be scared off if you aren’t the biggest sour beer fan. It is a gentle sourness that is complimented by a citrus zing and a little bitterness in the aftertaste. Enjoy this interesting beer.
