by Piwne Podziemie (Beer Underground)
Piwne Podziemie translates as ‘Beer Underground’, and they are the second of our new Polish breweries who have joined our portfolio.
They started life in 2014 so have been doing their thing within the Polish craft beer scene for over 10 years and have gained a popularity for their flavoursome creations.
And I thought we’d kick off with this beer, partly because I like the arresting can art and also because I really fancied trying the American Stout.
Pouring a rich dark colour with that important mocha head, the aroma is full of roasted malt and coffee. At least it did on the first sniff, though as the beer warms up and the dark malts open up there is more of a chocolate aroma.
The same is true for the flavour. When colder, the coffee is very prominent and the roasted malts present as slightly sharp. Given the Polish like their beers in half litre serves, it has more than enough time to warm up and that leads to a much fuller, rounder flavour with more sweetness of milk chocolate moving into dark chocolate. The ‘American’ style hints at the higher level of hop bitterness coming through on the finish.
The beer drinks a bit bigger than the ABV, and I really enjoyed this first beer from Beer Underground.
